Communicating simply with Plain English

Our website is part of the Internet Crystal Mark scheme

Internet Crystal Mark for Plain English

We want our website to be:

  • free of jargon, using simple, plain English
  • easy to search, so residents can search and retrieve information about Council services without having any knowledge of the Council's structure
  • accessible to everyone, including people who are blind or partially sighted

In trying to achieve these aims we contacted the Plain English Campaign and followed its guidelines.

We try:

  • to present information in a logical order and write clearly and simply using everyday words and short sentences
  • to keep our webpage design simple, consistent and free of moving images

Plain English is an independent organisation promoting crystal-clear language. Founded in 1979, it defines plain English as "something that the intended audience can read, understand and act upon the first time they read it."

We are delighted that the Plain English Campaign has allowed us to join the Internet Crystal Mark scheme. By joining it we feel we are achieving our aims.

However, our website is developing all the time. Please let us know if you have any comments, good or bad, about our website or suggestions about how we can improve it. Use our online form What do you think of our website?
