Most batteries end up in landfill where their hazardous material can leach into the soil and cause harm. It is much more environmentally friendly to recycle batteries in a safe, correct manner.
Batteries contain a range of metals which, when extracted, can be reused as secondary raw materials.
The Council has two places within the borough where residents can recycle batteries. These are the Council Offices, and the Market Office:
1. The Council Offices
37 Pembroke Rd
London
W8 6PW
Directions to the Council Offices: the building is located around the corner from Tesco’s, Earls Court. In the main reception there is a clear plastic container mounted on a green stand just inside the door as you enter.
2. The Market Office
72 Tavistock Road
London
W11 1AN
The Council will collect alkaline batteries only. Alkaline batteries are the most common type of battery - used in torches, walkmans, children’s toys, etc. Alkaline batteries can be of the types AA, AAA, C, D and 9V. Most alkaline batteries have the word ‘Alkaline’ printed somewhere on the battery.
Unfortunately the Council cannot take watch batteries, mobile phone batteries, camera batteries, old nicad or nimh rechargeable batteries or any other types of batteries. For safe disposal of these types of battery, you should take them to the Civic Amenity site at Smugglers Way, Wandsworth SW18 1JS.
Ryness electrical stores will accept alkaline batteries only for recycling. Ryness stores in or near Kensington and Chelsea can be found at:
Please leave your batteries to be recycled with a member of staff in store.
It is recommended wherever possible that you run appliances from the mains via an adaptor, or use rechargeable batteries. Universal adaptors are available from most hardware stores.
