Getting the most out of training

  • Think about what you want to achieve – why are you attending and what do you hope to learn?
  • Do some background reading into the subject. Discuss the course with your manager
  • Don't call work – make arrangements for someone else to handle queries
  • Participate – you will get more from training if you ask questions and make a contribution
  • Evaluate the training – comment on the variety of aspects of training
  • Update your training records – if you have a personal training record keep it up to date

On the training day:

Be on time: Make sure that you arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of the course. You may be turned away from the course if you are late. No refund will be given.

Important: Partial attendance will stop you from sitting the examination. To sit the examinations you must attend 100 per cent of the foundation courses and 80 per cent of the intermediate and advanced courses.

Dress: usually casual but smart unless otherwise stated by your employer.

Refreshments: coffee and tea (but not lunch) are provided during planned breaks for courses scheduled to be run in the training rooms at the Council Offices. There is a range of food premises within 10 minutes walk from the Council's training centre.

Duration: Courses usually (unless otherwise notified) start at 9.00 am and end at approximately 5.00 pm. Lunch break lasts approximately 45 minutes. Half day course times are either 9.30 am to 12.30 pm, or 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm (unless otherwise agreed).

Homework: There may be some homework for courses over several days. Please allow time in the evenings to do this.

Assignments for Advanced Courses: Assignments must be handed in at least four weeks before the examination date. Failure to do so will result in an extra examination and administration examination fee being charged to your business.

Professional Trainers' Certificate: Candidates should prepare materials for a 20 to 30 minute presentation..

Examinations

  • Foundation or Level 2 courses end with multiple choice tick tests (oral examinations may be arranged)
  • Intermediate/ Level 3 and Advanced/ Level 4examinations require candidates to respond in an appropriate level that reflects the added responsibilities of a team leader or manager
  • Advanced examination dates are set by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

Important: We advise candidates for Intermediate and Advanced courses to have the equivalent of GCSE English Language or Cambridge First Certificate (ESOL)

Candidates will not be offered an alternative examination date. Re-sits are by arrangement and incur additional fees.

Certificates: Awards are only made to candidates who successfully pass examinations at the end of certificate courses. Successful candidates receive their results and certificates 8 to10 weeks after sitting the examination.

Smoking Policy: Smoking is not permitted in any training room.

Language: English is used to present the course and the examination papers are in English. At present it is not possible to offer a translation service. However, the Council is considering making this service more available to all sectors of the community. Contact 020 7341 5606 or see becoming a registered trainer or further details about trainers who may be able to run courses in other languages.

Mobile: Telephones: Please switch off all mobile telephones in the training room.

Personal Details: You will need to know your employer's full name and address including post code and telephone number.

Remember: The more you put into a course the more you will get out of it.
