Food Premises: accidents and injuries

Common injuries and accidents

Common accidents and injuries that occur in your industry are due to:

  • Slips, trips and falls
  • Manual handling
  • Burns (from hot surfaces, scalding and chemicals)

Others may occur which unfortunately result in amputation of a limb, or even death.

Legal obligations

Owners of food businesses have a legal obligation to report specific injuries, dangerous occurrences, and diseases to their local authority (and in some cases to the Health and Safety Executive)

The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 requires the following work-related incidents to be reported

  • Violence to staff
  • Deaths
  • Major injuries
  • Over-three-day injuries
  • Injuries to the public where they are taken to hospital
  • Work-related diseases
  • Dangerous occurrences
