Product recall of Aldi Stores Ltd Bilash Premium Chicken Curry 400g Cans

Heads of Environmental Health Services and Directors of Trading Standards will wish to be aware of a product recall by Aldi Stores Ltd of Bilash Premium Chicken Curry in 400g cans due to contamination of one of the ingredients with the illegal dye Sudan I The product was manufactured by Glenbrook Foods Ltd, Portadown, Craigavon Northern Ireland.

Sudan I is not a permitted colour under the Colours in Food Regulations 1995. It is considered to be a genotoxic carcinogen and its presence, at any level is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose. (Genotoxic means a chemical or other agent that damages cellular DNA, resulting in mutations or cancer.)

The Product recalled is:

No other Aldi products are known to be affected

Aldi will be issuing a product recall notice in the national newspapers which will appear as from 7 October 2003 . The company have also placed point-of-sale notices in all their stores.

A small number of batches of Aldi Bilash Premium Chicken Curry have been made with a chilli powder that may have been contaminated with the colour Sudan 1. This colour is not likely to be harmful unless consumed in large quantities over a period of time. As a precautionary measure Aldi have withdrawn this product from sale.

If you have purchased one of the affected cans please return it to any Aldi store for a full refund.

No other products or codes are affected.
