Food Safety at street parties
Events
such as Notting Hill Carnival require considerable organisational skills
and planning but local neighbourhood street parties, perhaps in the road
where you live, are achievable with even a limited amount of time and
money.
The golden rule is seek advice from the Council's The
Directorate of Environmental Health.
Whether you are planning to hold an event in your own garden, community
centre or in a street make sure that food poisoning does not ruin your day. Here
are a few simple tips to help you on your way:
- Once purchased, take chilled and frozen food home quickly.
- Prepare and store raw and cooked food separately.
- Use foods within the "Use by" date on the label.
- Keep pets and pests away from food and food preparation surfaces.
- Wash hands thoroughly before preparing food, after going to the toilet or
after handling pets.
- Wash worktops and utensils between handling food which is to be cooked and
food which is not.
- Do not eat food containing uncooked eggs.
- Ensure food is piping hot and always follow instructions on food
packaging.
- If using a barbeque cook food in the oven first then finish off on the
barbeque which must be pre-heated.
- Keep hot food hot and cold food cold.
- Do not prepare or serve food for others if you have diarrhoea and or
vomiting.
