Aerosol recycling: your questions answered

Love the street you live in logo

Q: Do aerosols have to be emptied before they are put out for recycling?

A: Yes. Aerosols should be used up and empty.

Q: Will it help if I crush my aerosols first?

A: No. The aerosol cans should not be be pierced or squashed.

Q: Do I need to arrange a special collection for my aerosols?

A: No. Treat like a can or tin and mix in with all your other recycling: all together in one bag or bin

Q: What happens to the aerosols?

A: The mixed load of recycling collected from Kensington and Chelsea are bulked up and sent to a materials recycling facility for sorting.

The aerosols and assorted other cans and tins are then sent for reprocessing for the constituent metals to be recovered.

De-tinning for example, recovers tin and high grade steel. Steel scrap is essential in new steel production.
