Opening Times

The house is open daily 11am to 5.30pm, closed on Tuesdays

The house is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day

We regret that the garden will be closed to the public from Monday 30 June until Saturday 30 August for external building works. The Studio will be closed to the public on Saturday 4 October.

How to get to Leighton House

The museum is north of Kensington High Street, off Melbury Road.

  • By London Underground: catch the District or Circle Lines to High Street Kensington. Turn left out of the station, walk down the High Street taking the first right after the Commonwealth Institute Building which is Melbury Road and then first left into Holland Park Road. The walk should take approximately 10 minutes
  • By bus: catch the 9,10,27,28,49,328 to Odeon Cinema/Commonwealth Institute
  • By train: the nearest station is Kensington Olympia. Leighton House is approximately 5 minutes away
  • By car: Metred parking is limited in Holland Park Road. The nearest car park is approximately 10 minutes walk from Leighton House in nearby Holland Park off Abbotsbury Road.

Information desk and shop

An information desk is located in the reception area of the Museum with guides to the paintings on display. Information on Leighton House in large print and braille is available. A small shop selling a range of cards and gift items relating to Leighton House and its collections is located in the reception area.

Guided tours and group visits

All groups visits and guided tours must be booked in advance by telephoning 020 7471 9156.

Guided tours for groups may be arranged in advance for a minimum of 15 people. Adults £6.

Free guided tours take place every Wednesday and Thursday at 2.30pm - there is no need to book for these - admission charges still apply.

Facilities for visitors with disabilities

Leighton House is not, at present, accessible to wheelchair users.
Information on Leighton house is available in large print and in braille. Please enquire at the reception desk or call 020 7602 3316.

Photography and video recording

Photography is not allowed in the Museum except by prior arrangement with the Curator's Office and subject to a charge. Please email requests to museums@rbkc.gov.uk.

Visitor advice

The tiled wall surfaces in Leighton House are delicate. Please do not touch them or the sculpture and paintings on display as this can cause permanent damage. You may also set off an alarm.

Eating, drinking and smoking are not allowed in any part of the Museum. Animals, with the exception of guide dogs are not allowed in the House. Please switch off mobile phones personal stereos when visiting the house.

The garden

A large and peaceful garden, restored in 1997 to conform to the original layout and planting scheme is located to the rear of the Museum and is open from April until the end of September (depending on weather conditions). Please note the garden will be closed from 30 June to 30 August 2008 due to external building work.

There are no facilities at Leighton House, but Kensington High Street has a wide range of restaurants close by and a café is also located in nearby Holland Park.

  • Linley Sambourne House is ten minutes' walk away and can be visited by guided tour.
    Weekends: Adult £6, Concessions £4, Under 18s £1. Advisable to book in advance.

  • The Artists Houses of Holland Park: Many of the houses around Leighton House were commissioned by artists as studio-houses during the second half of the nineteenth century. None are open to the public, but it is possible to view exteriors of houses designed by Richard Norman Shaw and William Burges
  • Holland Park is five minutes walk from Leighton House. The Park contains two exhibition galleries; The Orangery and The Ice House with a programme of temporary exhibitions between April and October
  • Leighton House is within easy reach of the major national museums at South Kensington.
  • Kensington Palace is approximately 15 minutes away by bus
