You can recycle at home by making your own compost for your garden.
Making compost from garden and household waste is one of the best things any gardener can do. It's easy and costs very little in time or effort. Making compost will help you reduce pollution.
Your plants will grow healthier and look happier for it. It will save you money on fertilisers too.
You can compost all organic waste from your garden and kitchen. All fruit, vegetables and waste from these, flowers and leaves, tea and tea bags, coffee grounds and egg shells (preferably crushed) can be included. From your garden you can include weeds, grass, soft cuttings and prunings and shredded twigs.
Other household items to include are waste paper, including tissues, kitchen towels, newspaper, printer paper, corrugated paper/card and cardboard but not too much; it should all be torn up or crumpled and mixed in with the rest of the compost.
Things you might not have thought to include are hair from family and pets, vegetarian pet manure and vacuum dust. All these items can be placed in a compost bin, which you can purchase from a garden hardware store.
When out and about make sure you place your rubbish in allocated bins and not on the street. Even if this means keeping hold of your rubbish for a while until you find a bin.
When out walking with your dog (if you own one) make sure you clean up after it and dispose of the waste appropriately. Or alternatively make your dog use an allocated ‘dog toilet’ found in some of our parks.
In general be aware of your surroundings and treat them with care. You should be proud of where you live.
