Common Assessment Training Programme

The Children’s Act 2004 has brought in a number of changes to working practices within Children’s Services as part of the Integrated Working strategy.

The Borough has set up a comprehensive programme of training courses to ensure all managers and front-line staff who work with children and young people and/or adults with parental responsibilities, are aware of and able to implement these changes.

What training do I need?

There are two courses available.

  • Introduction to Integrated Working (CAF and Information Sharing)
This half day workshop will introduce staff to the background and context of Integrated Working. All staff working with children are expected to understand what the Common Assessment Framework (‘CAF’) is, when it should be considered, and how to complete a Pre Assessment Checklist to identify children with additional needs that are not currently being met by services. The workshop will give specific attention to these areas.
  • Integrated Working (Using the CAF in Practice)
This course will enable staff to develop the necessary skills to make Common Assessments, and clarify some of the issues and questions around the role of the Lead Professional. Staff who carry out Common Assessments are required under national guidance to have completed this assessor training.

Please note: It is essential to attend the two courses in this order as each course builds on the previous one.
