Individual Budgets

Your life - your choice

Individual Budgets take the money which Social Services would spend in meeting someone’s care needs and puts the user in control of how that money gets spent. This is done by telling people how much they are entitled to and putting them at the centre of the planning process. We help them to work out what they need and to plan how they want their needs met.

At the heart of the scheme it is the recognition that the service user is the person best placed to understand their needs. Secondly, Individual Budgets involves a commitment from us to enable people to take as much control over their care and support as they feel comfortable with.

The Council is committed for the duration of the pilot, to working with older people with physical disabilities and people with learning difficulties. For the period, we are being evaluated for research purposes. We cannot guarantee everyone an Individual Budget, but we should be in a position to extend this option more widely from June 2007.

Support Brokerage

To support people in planning and meeting their needs, the council is working in conjunction with Action Disability Kensington and Chelsea to enable people to access support brokers. Action Disability Kensington and Chelsea can offer advice and training to help people become support brokers so that they can offer their skills to help others who want to take advantage of Individual Budgets.

Should you want more information on support brokerage, or becoming a support broker, please contact Action Disability Kensington and Chelsea who provide training on Support Brokerage. See Individual Budgets team.
