Microwave cooking
Keep your microwave oven clean
- cleaning with a purpose made detergent and disinfectant will
remove dirt and reduce bacteria that have built up - this will
ensure that your microwave work efficiently
- check your microwave manual for recommended cleaning products
and methods
- only use utensils and containers that have been approved for
microwave use - improper use may result in damaging the microwave
oven, or making the food unsafe
Cooking food properly
- if you are not going to eat cooked microwaved food immediately,
wait until the steam has gone and the food is properly cooled
before putting it into a fridge
- leftovers should be used within 24 hours - if in doubt, throw
it out
- heat leftovers and pre-cooked food to at least 70°C - food
should be very hot and steaming before it is served
- liquids containing meats (like casseroles and stews) must be
boiled for approximately five minutes to ensure the pieces of meat
are completely heated through
- avoid reheating or heating babies bottles containing milk or
baby formula in the microwave - the contents may be unevenly heated
and may scald or burn the baby
- always test food temperatures once you have microwaved food
intended for babies and toddlers
- when your microwave signals the end of the cycle, wait until
the standing time is over before eating - the food continues to
cook for a couple of minutes even when the microwave is turned
off
- cook food for the minimum time recommended, then test for
completeness of cooking (juices in chicken, beef, pork and fish
should run clear)
