Do on-line courses satisfy food safety, health and safety, licensing, and disability discrimination training requirements as required by law?

  •  FOOD SAFETY

EU Regulation 852/2004 Hygiene for Food Stuffs requires food business operators to ensure “that food handlers are supervised and instructed and/or trained in food hygiene matters commensurate with their work activity…” The word “training” does not imply that formal accredited certificated training is the only way to comply with the legal requirement. Food business operators might comply on the basis of proven knowledge. Whatever type of training takes place, the knowledge and understanding must be put into good practice that is supervised by the food business operator. Visit http://www.food.gov.uk/ for further details about your legal training requirements.

  •  HEALTH AND SAFETY

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers to provide information, supervision, instruction and training. Depending upon the work activity, risk assessments, and competency of appointed persons to carry out a particular workplace activity the training does not necessarily have to be an accredited certificate.  This applies for example to hospitality, catering, leisure, retail, and office based workplaces. Visit http://www.hse.gov.uk/ for further details about your legal training requirements.

  •  LICENSING

Award for Personal Licence Holders ( formerly NCPLH) is an e-learning course that provides the training required by law for anyone authorising the retail sale of alcohol. It has been designed around the BIIAB NCPLH syllabus, and is equivalent to a one-day (6-hour) classroom-based course. On-line official certification testing and certification (issued by EDI) meets the legal requirements for Personal Licence Holders.

  •  DDA (Disability Discrimination Awareness)

The DDA delivers the training required under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 for employees in a hospitality or leisure environment.

Are the courses accredited by Ofqual ?

  •    no. However, the Foundation Food Safety and Foundation Health and Safety courses have been independently reviewed and commended for Level 2 training by Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance (http://www.highfieldabc.com/). They meet industry standards and regulatory requirements on provision of supervision and instruction and/or training by the business operator.
  •     after successful completion of the on-line programme you will receive a certificate from Mindleaders Third Force and an Ofqual approved awarding body.
  •     successful candidates will receive a certificate awarded by Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance (http://www.highfieldabc.com/). More details are at www.rbkc.gov.uk/publichealthtraining.

How do I organise a revision session and an examination that lead to an award of an accredited Level 2 qualification?

  •   you can convert your on-line course of study for Level 2 in Food Safety or in Health and Safety into accredited a qualification.
  •  this option is only available if you after a Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering or Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace  and have completed the appropriate Level 2 programme on-line.
  •   to convert this into an accredited qualification contact the Environmental Healthline on 020 7361 3002 about attending a one hour revision session followed by attempting a one hour multiple choice paper of thirty questions. The pass mark is 20 out of 30.
  •   these sessions are held in the Council Offices near Earl’s Court.
  •   sessions may run in your premises if eight or more candidates attend a session
  •   on booking and payment you will need to send us a copy of the certificate that has been produced at the end of your on-line programme.

What other courses are available?

Keep an eye on the Council’s website for new courses that become available both on-line and as accredited courses run in a suitable training room at Levels 1 to 4. These include food safety, HACCP, health and safety, risk assessment, hygiene in health and social care, infection control, training skills, and more.

Do you offer blended learning or distance learning?

If you have three or more candidates in your organisation it may be possible for them to do Levels 2 and 3 in health and safety and/or food safety by distance or blended learning. As the business operator you will have to produce a signed 250 word statement for the Level 2 candidates and a 400 word statement for the Level 3 candidates to show how you will be supervising them to turn the theory into practice. For each level the candidates will receive a workbook which must be completed before attending a half day for revision and exam at Level  1 or Level 2,  and a whole day for revision and exam at Level 3.

Please note:

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and Mindleaders Third Force reserve the rights to adjust the advertised fees as necessary or to terminate any of these programmes. It is your responsibility to turn the theory into practice.
