Council's response to emergencies in the community
During an emergency situation the Council will provide
specialist teams to help deal with the unfolding incident such
as:
Highways
The Councils Highways team will clean up any debris on the roads,
divert traffic if needed, undergo any emergency maintenance if
required and generally try and have the Councils roads up and
running as soon as possible.
Dangerous Structures
The Building Control team will send a dangerous structures officer
to assess the structural integrity of a building if deemed unsafe,
and will then follow procedures to cordon off the building to
prevent further damage to surrounding areas.
Environmental Waste Management
The Environmental Waste Management team are responsible for the
control and clear up of environmental waste such as asbestos
removal.
The Contingency Planning Unit
The unit has procedures in place to deal with any residents that
have been evacuated from their homes due to an emergency. The
Council will provide humanitarian assistance to communities which
may include:
- providing shelter
- setting up a rest centre if required
However as outlined in the Home Emergency Plan residents should
consider alternative arrangements in a situation where access to
their homes is no longer available such as staying with relatives
or friends.
