Types of Emergencies
Emergencies can be both natural and man made, and within the UK
there are a number of potential emergencies that can cause
significant disruption to both the community and
environment. Below are some of the types of emergencies the
council plans for.
Severe weather
As seen in February 2009 and 2010 severe weather, such as snow,
can cause major disruption. So can weather conditions
like heatwaves, high winds and gales. Due to the high level of
disruption these natural events can cause, plans need to be in
place to help prepare and respond to the event to minimise the
effects on the borough and its community. Find advice on different
kinds of severe weather.
Flooding
Flooding can occur in a number of forms, such as
tidal flooding or surface water flooding. Flooding can affect
many aspects of your lives and therefore the Council’s plans aim to
reduce the disruption that it can cause. See the Council's flood risk advice for
further information on flooding.
Electricity cut
A prolonged power outage can be very disruptive to
day-to-day life and affects almost everything. Therefore our
plans try to minimise the amount of disruption a power
outage could cause. If you would have a particular problem in a
power cut see UK Power Priority Services for more
details.
Gas Leaks
A severe gas leak can cause people to be
removed from their home for a long or short period of time.

Fire
Fire can strike your home, your neighbour’s home or the shop
on the corner - any of these can have an effect on
you.
Water Supply
A disruption to your water supply can have a
significant impact on your day to day life, especially if you are
vulnerable. Find out how to register for Thames
Water's Extra Care service.
