Cemeteries services
The cemeteries are owned and managed by the Royal Borough of
Kensington and Chelsea. The graves and surrounding grounds are
maintained by private contractors.
The Cemeteries Division aims to provide a sensitive and a caring
service to users of the Royal Borough's two cemeteries at:
This involves the administration and organisation of burial
arrangements, attendance at interments and ensuring compliance with
the associated legal requirements and Burial Codes of Practice.
A 'maintained grave' service is provided by an agreement made
with grave owners for seasonal planting and maintenance of
graves.
Other functions of the service include the sale of grave spaces
for future use, the issue of permits for the erection of monuments
and the transfer of grave ownership and grave spaces.
The cemeteries grounds are open to visitors from 9.00am daily.
Closing times vary according to the season and are advertised on
the entrance noticeboards.
Exhumations
From time to time people from abroad make requests for the
remains of friends or family buried in Britain to be exhumed and
taken back to their native home. In order to protect the health of
the grave workers and surrounding population, the Council's
Environmental Health service must be notified of such cases and our
agreement sought on the health precautions to be taken. With two
famous burial grounds in the Royal Borough, Kensal Green and
Brompton, there are two or three such requests a year.
