Mayor goes ahead with the extension

The Mayor announced on the 30 September that he would be going ahead with plans to extend the congestion charge zone into Kensington and Chelsea. The extended zone will become operational on 19 February 2007.

This comes after the Transport for London consultation showed that only 24 per cent of London residents support the scheme.

In his announcement, Ken Livingstone acknowledged this largely negative response to his proposal. However, he declared in his statement that he was not persuaded that these representations outweighed the arguments in favour of the extension.

The Mayor announced a number of minor changes to his original proposal. These included:

  • Charging hours to end at 6pm, (rather than 6.30pm) when the extension is introduced
  • From September 2006, drivers will have up to midnight on the day after they have driven into the zone to pay the charge (the £8 charge will increase to £10 when paid the next day)
  • Read the press release containing the Council’s initial response to the Mayor’s decision. Mayor should respect views of ordinary Londoners says Kensington and Chelsea.
