Ways to pay your Council Tax

There are several ways to pay your Council Tax bill. Direct Debit is the easiest way to pay it.

You can also pay online or by BACS, or in person.

Pay by Direct Debit or Change Payment Method

Direct Debit is the easiest way to pay your bill. We offer a choice of four dates each month. These are the 7, 15, 21 and 28. You can ask to pay yearly, twice a year, quarterly or in ten monthly instalments between April and January.

You are also protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee, which promises that you will get your money back straight away if anything goes wrong.

You can set up a Direct Debit quickly by registering to use our online MyRBKC service.

You will need:

  • your current address including postcode
  • your Council Tax account reference number
  • your bank account details

What happens next:

We aim to issue you with your bill within 10 days of the start of your account or notification (if you are moving in at a future date)

Pay online

You can pay an individual Council Tax bill using your credit or debit card.

Pay your bill online

All Online Payments transactions take place through secure networks using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). This means that you will be paying your Council Tax over a secure connection and any information you send over the internet will be encrypted

Is this your first payment? – things you will need.

You will need your debit or credit card details and your Council Tax account reference number (this is a ten-digit number and is found at the top of your bill).

You will need one of the following debit or credit cards: MasterCard, Visa, Delta, Switch, Maestro or Visa Electron to use this service.

Once your credit card details have been submitted to us and debit or credit card company have approved the payment, the payment will be processed within 2 working days.

Automated payment line

You can pay your Council Tax bill by credit or debit card 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling the automated bill payment line on: 020 3974 4670. Have your card and Council Tax account reference number ready when you call.

Online or telephone banking

To pay your Council Tax bill via telephone or online banking with your bank, you will need our bank details:

  • Our bank account number: 00000000
  • Our sort code is: 57-20-24
  • You must quote your 10 digit Council Tax account reference number shown at the top of your Council Tax bill.
Debit card

If you have a British issued debit card, you can pay over the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling 020 3859 6087. You need to supply your card details and your Council Tax account reference number.

By post

You should make cheques payable to the 'Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea' and post them to:

Please write your account number and name and address clearly on the back of the cheque or enclose your bill.

We do not send receipts for postal payments unless you ask for one and provide a stamped, addressed envelope.

If you send cash through the post, send it by registered mail.

Post Office / Payzone 

All Post Offices have Payzone facilities and will be able to take your payment. You can also pay at other Payzone outlets which accept Council Tax payments. Please ensure that you take your Council Tax bill with you as the barcode on the front of the bill will enable the payment to be allocated directly to your Council Tax account.

In person

You can pay using our self-service payment kiosks at the Town Hall, Hornton Street, Kensington, W8 7NX. The town hall is open between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Friday.

All instalments are normally due on the 15 of each month however Direct Debit payers can choose from four payment dates: 7, 15, 21 or 28. If you do not keep to your instalment arrangements, you risk losing your right to pay by instalments.
