Newly
Qualified Teachers Induction
Guidance and information on Newly
Qualified Teacher induction in the Royal Borough of Kensington and
Chelsea
All Kensington and Chelsea
schools provide organised programs of school-based support to help
newly qualified teachers (NQTs) meet the challenges of their
first teaching role and demonstrate the professional standards for
teachers. During induction, NQTs are assigned to an experienced
teacher who will act as their mentor. This page and the new
online NQT induction handbook have been created to provide easy to
access resources and guidance to support NQTs, mentors and
schools through the induction process.
Registration
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea can act as
Appropriate Body (AB) for maintained and non maintained schools
that meet the criteria for institutions
where NQT induction may be served. This criteria can
be found on pages 9 to 12 of the Statutory guidance
for induction. All NQTs must be registered with the
Appropriate Body before their induction begins, registration forms are provided at
the bottom of this page.
In order to meet the Core standards, an NQT must be
employed for at least a term and within a role which will
allow them to demonstrate the required knowledge and professional
skills. More information about the suitability of NQT
posts can be found on page 13 of the Statutory
Guidance for Induction [PDF] (file size 317Kb).
If you have any questions about the registration
process please contact the CPD service at cpdteam@rbkc.gov.uk
Part time NQTs
NQTs on part time contracts will need
complete their induction over a longer period than the standard
full time equivalent (3 terms). For example, an NQT on a
0.5FTE contract would need twice as long to complete there
induction: 6 terms over a 2 year period. To calculate the
length of induction for part time NQTs download
the TDA's Induction
Calculator [Excel document] (file size 32.5KB). You
will need Microsoft excel to open this document.
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
NQTs must have QTS before they start their induction and a
copy of their QTS certificate, issued by the General Teaching
Council, should be included with all registration forms. For
more information about obtaining QTS certificates and Teacher
Reference Numbers (TRNs) please visit the General Teaching
Council website.
Skills Tests
It is essential to check that NQTs have the
Skills Tests. Those qualifying since 2002 only need to produce
their QTS Certificate. Those qualifying in 2000 and 2001 must
separately produce evidence of passing the relevant Skills
Tests.
- NQTs who qualified in 1999 did not need to
take any of the Skills Tests
- NQTs who qualified in 2000 must have passed
the Numeracy Skills Tests
- NQTs who qualified in 2001 must have passed
the Numeracy and Literacy Skills Tests
- NQTs who qualified in 2002 or later must have
passed the Numeracy, Literacy and ICT Skills Tests
To find out more about the QTS Skills
tests please visit the Training
