The NQT Induction Programme
In Kensington and Chelsea, ours is a
team approach to learning, with parents, pupils,
teachers and support staff working together. Our Newly Qualified
Teachers will be developed as effective learners within a culture
of team working within a family of schools. This
year, the NQT programme is the result of further and closer
collaboration and partnership between the Royal
Borough School Improvement Service and its schools – a
collaboration that will grow and develop in the years ahead. We are
committed to working in a way that nurtures a strategy of
‘School to School Improvement’ where one school’s
outstanding practice systematically benefits the wider family of
schools. All schools can demonstrate exceptional
practice that other schools can learn from. It is this
culture of sharing that will help to sustain the excellent
standards and secure outcomes for our children and young
people into the future.
To book a place on any of these sessions please contact the CPD
service at cpdteam@rbkc.gov.uk.
(All sessions are from 9.30am to 3.30pm)
Day 1: Progression in Writing
A clear understanding of the progression in writing is essential
to planning and delivering effective Literacy lessons. This
course will support teachers in developing this understanding,
through close examination of the text types, sentence level and
punctuation development and teaching and learning activities to
support this development. It will include reference to
levelling criteria
- KS1: Tuesday 27 September (IN114517)
- KS2: Wednesday 28 September (IN114518)
Day 2: Managing Behaviour

strategies for creating a positive learning environment.

Day 3: Guided Reading and Phonics
Reading is now a key focus of the new Ofsted Inspection.
Leading effective guided reading can be a challenge, in terms of
lesson preparation and classroom organisation, and, unlike other
subjects we teach, often teachers do not have a focused learning
objective for each session. Maintaining the balance between
applying phonic knowledge and developing comprehension can be
challenging for those working in FS and KS1. This full day
course will support teachers in reviewing their subject knowledge
and developing their pedagogy in order to deliver effective guided
reading routinely
- FS: Thursday 13 Oct (IN114523)
- KS2: Tuesday 11 October (IN114524)
- KS1: Wednesday 12 October (IN114522)
Day 4: Assessment for Learning in Literacy and Numeracy
Assessment for Learning (AfL) is at the heart of outstanding
classroom practice. Since its introduction, AfL has become the most
effective means of understanding what a pupil does or does not
understand in class. AfL provides the teacher with constant,
reliable feedback on the effectiveness of their teaching and pupils
learning. This course will give teachers a range of effective
strategies to maximise AfL opportunities across the curriculum
- KS2: Wednesday 19 October (IN114526)
- KS1: Thursday 20 October (IN114525)
Day 5: Progression in Numeracy
A clear and consistent approach to the teaching of written
calculation is key to a child’s mathematical development. For new
teachers, the process of becoming confident in teaching
calculations can be quite daunting. This course will support NQTs
in developing their understanding of the progression in calculation
in all four operations, and the different mental and written
methods (informal and formal) children should be using throughout
the Primary Years. In addition, the course will provide teachers
with a wide range of techniques, resources and methods of assessing
children

Day 6: Planning for Literacy and Numeracy
A newly qualified teacher has the ultimate responsibility for
planning and delivering whole units of work. This course will
support teachers with this task, building on the subject knowledge
covered in the Progression in Literacy and Progression in Numeracy
courses. It will show teachers how to plan for progression,
differentiation and assessment opportunities, always ensuring to
create the most exciting and engaging units of work possible.
- KS1: Tuesday 22 November (IN114534)
- KS2: Wednesday 23 November (IN114539)

extensive knowledge of the school and local community to support
children's learning. The afternoon session provides strategies for
building strong partnership with parents to address their concerns
and use their extensive knowledge of their children to support
learning:

different levels of SEN, how each level affects the class room
teacher, what can be expected from Annual Reviews and how to plan
for SEN groups/ children and statemented children

whole classes. The morning session will support teachers in
developing ways to help pupils be creative and look at simple units
of work that achieve good Art outcomes with the whole class. In the
afternoon, teachers will be helped to develop their PE subject
knowledge by creating a bank of ideas of how to plan and deliver a
successful PE session In addition, both sessions will develop the
knowledge and skills necessary to deliver successful lessons.
