Support services available
There are lots of services for children, young people and
families in the Royal Borough. Bringing up children is not always
easy, but there are places where you can find advice, help and
people to talk to.
Our aim is to help parents, whenever possible, to bring up their
children in their own homes. We believe it is important to work
alongside parents rather than take over from them.
Special education needs
It is estimated that as many as one in five children may have
special educational needs and need special help at some time to
make progress in school. For more information, see our
Social workers
Social workers can help parents in lots of ways. Working with
you, they will assess your family's needs and decide which services
could help. They can also provide direct help to you at home by
giving advice and practical assistance, and by supporting you at
times when things may be difficult. Social workers may also help
families to get other services such as mental health services,
counselling, and help with drug and alcohol problems.
Who do I contact if I need help?
You can telephone or visit your local Social Services
office. Visit the Social
Services pages.
If you cannot visit one of our offices because of your personal
circumstances, we can arrange to see you at home or somewhere else
which is convenient for you. Our staff will always carry
identification with them.
If your first language is not English, or if you need help to
communicate because you have a sight, hearing or other disability,
we will arrange for an interpreter or any other help you need to
help you talk to us.
