Staffing and safety
Canalside is a licensed outdoor activity centre and holds an
Adventure Activities Licencing Authority (AALA) licence no L5565 .
This is a mandatory requirement for outdoor activity centres that
work with young people under the age of 18.
All staff are professionally qualified coaches and also active
in their field of expertise. The centre under goes safety reviews
on a regular basis, ensuring the overall safety of the facility and
quality of programme delivered.
Primary and secondary schools programmes
The outdoor environment is an idea classroom to involve,
challenge and provide exciting stimulating activity with real
learning outcomes. Many of the schools that use our facility either
work toward nationally recognised qualifications or in house
awards.
Canalside works with pupils aged 9 and above. Our programme can
be adapted to suit the need of the students. At the centre we
deliver outdoor education and adventurous activities.
The programme has been developed to work with pupils from key
stage 2 and the PHSE syllabuses right up to GCSE level in paddle
sports. Our secondary schools programme is delivered both onsite
here at Canalside and on the Tidal Thames with our partner centre
Cremorne Riverside.
Our programme can be either skill specific, or multi activity
based. The programme runs on a session basis to suit the needs of
the school timetable. Pupils build on skill and experience over
their time spent at the centre. Many of the techniques that are
learnt through outdoor education become valuable life skills,
learning to lift load safely, importance of good posture and
warming up and down correctly before and after exercise.
The centre runs also youth club right through out the year. Many
of our members come through our schools programmes and go on to
develop their skills further within the youth club.
