Important Information for Employers and Managers

Please note: The courses are only run in English (unless previously arranged) and therefore your trainees must have an ability to speak and read English to a level that will enables them to answer multiple choice questions for a minimum qualification equivalent to GCSE grades D to G. Interpreters are not permitted on the courses because of the size of our training rooms.

Advanced Level Assignments

Candidates who attend Advanced level courses must complete their assignments at least four weeks before the scheduled examination date. Failure to do so will result in their business being invoiced for additional administration charges.

Attendance

Candidates must attend at least 80 per cent of the training duration of the Advanced (or level 4) and Intermediate (or Level 3) courses if they are to sit the examinations, and 100 per cent of the duration of the Foundation (or Level 2) course.

Candidates cannot be expected to benefit from any training if they attend immediately after their shift ends or if they are to attend a shift straight after the course ends. They must not be made to take annual leave if they attend the health and safety or food hygiene courses.

Certificates of Attendance

Candidates who complete the whole course, but do not sit the examinations will, upon request, be given a certificate of attendance. The certificate indicates the level of course attended, the syllabus followed, and the date of the course. It does not prove competency in good food hygiene practice.

Comments about the Service

The Council welcomes comments about the standard of training and any suggestions that may help improve the service. All candidates are given an evaluation form to complete at the end of each course. The certificates will be sent to you together with a post-course evaluation form to complete and return to the Council.

Complaints Procedures

If you or your candidates wish to make a complaint about the training service, please contact the Environmental Health Training Co-ordinator on 020 7341 5606 or the Team Manager for the Food and Training Team on 020 7341 5647.

You may put your complaint in writing or request to see an officer. The Council will endeavour to answer your complaint in writing within seven working days. Alternatively, the Council has a complaints leaflet that you may ask for should you wish to make a formal complaint. You can also call the 'First Stop' for a leaflet on 020 7361 2828 or use the Council’s online feedback form. See Complaints, suggestions or compliments feedback form.

Course Language Delivery

Courses are only delivered in English. The trainer may turn candidates away who face difficulties in keeping up. No refund will be given. You will be sent a further invoice for the full standard course fee.

Candidates with limited English language skills may cause disruption to the more able candidates on courses. If you wish to change the numbers or names of candidates who you plan to send on the course, please contact the Council straight away.

Intermediate (or Level 3) and Advanced level (or Level 4) candidates should have an equivalent level of GCSE English language or Cambridge First Certificate (ESOL). The Council will offer you as much advice as possible to help candidates who lack key basic skills find an alternative training venue.

Please ask for a directory of language trainers, details for courses with individuals with special needs, or with learning difficulties. Contact 020 7341 5606 or visit the Council's website. See The Royal Borough.

Course Start Time

Candidates must turn up at least 10 minutes before the start of the course. The trainer and no refund given may turn latecomers away.

Evening Work and Preparation

Advanced (or Level 4) and Professional Trainers Certificate course candidates will be given evening work. Professional Trainers Certificate candidates should note that they will be assessed on a short presentation on a topic of their choice.

Examinations

Foundation (or Level 2) and Intermediate (Level 3) candidates must bring a 2B pencil and eraser. Foundation (or Level 2) candidates are given a multiple choice tick test paper at the end of their course. Oral exams may only be arranged for basic level candidates. Alternatively, if 28 days notice is given multiple-choice papers are available in certain languages.

Please note: Advanced (or Level 4) and Intermediate (Level 3) examination dates are fixed. Candidates will not be offered any alternative dates. The Advanced examinations are in written English only. If this is going to cause difficulties for your candidates please telephone 020 7341 5606 or 020 7341 5652 straightaway.

A scribe, who has had no training in food hygiene or health and safety, depending upon the examination, may be provided at your expense, for a candidate with evidence of certificated special needs or learning difficulties. The Council, however, cannot guarantee a separate training room. Alternative dates will not be offered. You must advise your candidates about the examination venue, date, and start time. The candidates should turn up 15 minutes before the start time.

Invoice Payment and Contract

The returned and signed training agreement has now entered you into a legally binding contract. This contract and the enclosed invoice require you to pay for the place(s) that are now confirmed. You are advised to read the conditions on the back of your copy of the training agreement.

Payment of the invoice must be made before the commencement of training or within 14 days of the date on the invoice - or which ever is sooner. Unless you provide the required written notice should your candidates not turn up for the training you will be invoiced for the full standard business rate as advertised in the Council’s current course brochure or web site. The Council reserves the right to increase fees as necessary.

Late Cancellations or Non-Attendance

These will render you liable for payment of the full fee. Refunds are not given. A request to transfer a candidate onto a similar level course, on an alternative date must be made at least 14 days in advance of the course. A substitute candidate may attend the course at no further cost.

Priority Bookings

Priority attendance on the first available course(s) will be given to businesses within The Royal Borough.

Refreshments

Lunch is not provided, however, tea and coffee are available.

Results and Certificates

These may take 8 to 10 weeks to be despatched. This will only be done once you have paid the invoice.

Suitability of Courses for Candidates

Generally, our Foundation or Level 2 courses are open to all. However, Intermediate or Level 3 and Advanced or Level 4 candidates should be able to demonstrate appropriate supervisory or management skills. It is important that Intermediate (Level 3) and Advanced (Level 4) candidates respond to examination questions in an appropriate level that reflects the added responsibilities or a team leader or manager.

Trainers

The trainers for the course may either be officers from the Directorate of Environmental Health, or the Council’s appointed training contractor. All enquiries concerning course content and training administration should be referred to this Directorate.
