Preparing for the training and how to get the most out of your course

Attendance

Ensure that you arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of the course. You may be turned away from the course if you are late. If you do not attend, your employer may be invoiced for the full course fee. Partial attendance will stop you from sitting the examination.

Duration

Courses usually start at 9am and end at approximately 5pm (unless notified otherwise). Lunch break lasts approximately 45 minutes. Half day course times are either 9.30am to 12.30pm or 2.30pm to 5.30pm (unless otherwise agreed).

Dress code

The dress code is usually casual but smart unless otherwise stated by your employer.

About you

The following suggestions may help you to get the most from the course. Think about what you want to achieve:

  • Why are you attending?
  • What do you hope to learn?
  • Ask your manager or supervisor if there is anything in particular you should ask or find out about during the course.

Refreshments

Coffee and tea, but not lunch are provided during planned breaks for courses scheduled to be run in the training rooms at the Council Offices. There is a range of food premises within 10 minutes walk from the Council’s training centre. For courses run in-house, refreshments are requested at the start of the course, approximately 10.45am and 2.45pm.

Take the opportunity to:

  • Meet people
  • Make new friends
  • Make new colleagues

What not to do

Do not call work – make arrangements for someone else to handle queries. If you have to take a mobile phone, keep it switched off during the sessions. Remember the chances are they can wait. However, ensure your colleagues know the location of the training course in case of an emergency.

Participate

You will get more from the training if you:

  • ask questions
  • make a contribution

Evaluate the training

You will be given the opportunity to make comments on a variety of aspects of the training. You will be helping others too if you:

  • give honest feedback
  • tell the trainer whether the training programme helped you achieve what you wanted
  • comment on the extent to which the training programme met your professional needs
  • complete the provided evaluation sheet

Follow up

It is advisable to follow up with your manager or supervisor – when you get back to your workplace make an effort to discuss the benefits of the course.

Make it a day well spent:

  • come relaxed
  • try to put work at the back of your mind
  • make an effort to get the best out of it
  • enjoy yourself!

Assessment

At the end of the programme, candidates will take a short assessment. Please do not worry about the assessment, as sample questions will be trialed throughout the day.

Progression

When you go back to work, discuss with your manager how they will supervise and help you put into practice what you have learnt. If you have a personal training record, remember to keep it up to date and get the trainer and your manager/supervisor to sign it.

When you receive your certificate, keep it in a safe place as you may need to produce it at an interview as proof of your achievement. For more information on gaining a higher-level qualification, visit the Royal Borough's Environmental Services Training home page or the awarding bodies listed below.
