Level 1 Award in Food Safety in Catering

What does it teach?

This catering sector specific course teaches the basic essentials good food hygiene practice.

The awarding bodies for this accredited qualification are Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, Royal Society for the Promotion of Health or Royal Institute of Public Health.

What is new about this qualification?

  • The qualification aims to improve employability
  • It will help individuals who are considering starting working with food
  • An introductory course before progressing on to the Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering or higher qualification

How long does it last?

It lasts for one half day.

Who should attend?

This qualification assumes no prior knowledge or experience of food handling. Potential candidates include:

  • 14-19 year olds
  • GCSE students
  • New recruits
  • People handling low-risk or wrapped foods
  • Non-food handlers such as cashiers, cleaners and checkout staff

After attending the course food business operators still have a legal obligation to provide supervision and instruction and/or training in food hygiene matters relevant to a food handler’s activities.

Holding a certificate on its own is no evidence of training. Practical application with the supervised help and instruction of owners or managers is vital.

Please note: Food handlers, (such as chefs or caterers) working with high-risk food or open food should consider the Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering.

If they are in a supervisory position the Level 3 Award in Supervising Food Safety in Catering and if managers or owners of businesses they should consider the Level 4 Award in Managing Food Safety in Catering.

The course covers the following subjects:

  • Food safety
  • Personal hygiene
  • Cleaning
  • Contamination

What languages is the course run in?

Predominantly in English. Please enquire about other languages and language papers.

Is there an assessment at the end of the course?

Yes, one multiple choice question paper of approximately15 questions depending upon the examination body.
