Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering

What does it teach?

This catering sector specific course teaches the importance of the foundations of the principles of good food safety. The awarding bodies for this accredited qualification are Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, Royal Society for the Promotion of Health or Royal Institute of Public Health.

What is new about this qualification?

  • This qualification has replaced the level 1 Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene.
  • The Royal Borough reserves the right to offer a similar level Qualification and Curriculum Authority accredited qualification leading to an examination set by either the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, Royal Institute of Public Health or Royal Society for the Promotion of Health.
  • Sector specific qualifications for Retail and Manufacturing are being developed by the examination bodies, Sector Skills Councils and QCA.
  • A non-accredited Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene qualification is available. The awarding body is the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health.

What does it cost?

How long does it last?

It lasts for one full day or two half-days.

Important: You are required to attend this course for 100 per cent of the time.

What subjects covered?

The course covers the following subjects:

  • the law
  • food safety hazards
  • refrigeration, chilling and cold holding of foods
  • cooking, hot handling and reheating of foods
  • food handling
  • principles of safe food storage
  • cleaning
  • food premises and equipment

What languages is the course run in?

Predominantly in English. Please enquire about other languages and language papers.

Is there an assessment at the end of the course?

Yes, one multiple choice question paper. Candidates are given up to an hour to complete the paper depending upon the examination body.
