Reasons for training

In 2003 to 2004, 235 fatal injuries and 159,000 other injuries were reported to the Health and Safety Executive.

In a recent survey 53 per cent of catering workers were identified as not washing their hands before handling food.

Less than two thirds of catering workers have a food hygiene certificate.

Eight million working days are lost each year due to food contamination/poisoning.

Food contamination costs the food industries millions of pounds a year.

Under food hygiene law in the UK, food handlers must receive adequate supervision, instruction and/or training in food hygiene for the work they do. The proprietor of each business is responsible for ensuring that their business complies with the law.
