Ofqual

For details about the role of Ofqual, please visit the Ofqual website.

If you are studying for an NVQ, A level or GCSE, the accredited qualification courses may provide underpinning knowledge for your portfolio of evidence.

Accredited qualification courses

For details about accreditation, visit the Ofqual website.

There is no legal requirement regarding food handlers being required to hold an accredited qualification. For further information about the legal requirements surrounding food safety training, visit the Food hygiene legislation page of the Food Standards Agency website.

You may wish to consider a generic or tailor-made non-accredited qualification that is not Ofqual approved but contains sufficient information to provide you with the necessary theoretical knowledge for you to put into practice what you have been taught.

Your manager has a legal responsibility to provide appropriate supervision with the practical application of knowledge gained on any course.

Non-accredited courses

Non-accredited courses may be just as appropriate as accredited qualification courses. Before deciding, consider if underpinning knowledge is required for an NVQ or GCSE. In terms of food safety and health and safety, the most important issue is how a manager will supervise, instruct and/or train an employee to turn knowledge into theory. It is not a certificate alone that improves standards or prevents an accident!

Which level course is for you?

The courses on offer by the Royal Borough fit within the National Framework of Qualifications. For example, the relevant levels for those working in a food business are:

  • Level 1 – for those who handle low risk or wrapped food only, before starting work or as part of an induction programme
  • Level 2 – for those who handle open, “high risk” foods (current basic or foundation certificates)
  • Level 3 – for food handlers with a supervisory role (equating to intermediate qualification)
  • Level 4 – for food handlers with a management role (equating to advanced qualification)
