Amenity Skips and Rubbish Tips

Western Riverside and Cringle Dock Reuse and Recycling Centres (also known as civic amenity sites or public tips) are situated at Smugglers Way, Wandsworth, SW18 and Cringle Street, Battersea, SW8.

These sites are provided by Western Riverside Waste Authority, for the residents of Kensington and Chelsea, Hammersmith and Fulham, Lambeth, Wandsworth and Westminster to deposit household waste and recycling from their own residence, free of charge.

Important Notice: If you intend to use anything other than a car to take your recycling and rubbish to either of the sites above, then you must pre-notify Western Riverside Waste Authority of your arrival and provide proof of identity when you arrive at site.

Vehicles that are not cars

Cars (without trailers) are as defined below and must be under 6 foot 6 inches in height and not have been modified to carry goods, (for example seats removed, side and/or back windows blocked out).

  • cars (saloon, hatchback, estate etc)
  • 4 x 4 passenger vehicles
  • people carriers
  • minibuses with all seats in place
  • black cabs
  • motor caravans
  • please note: Toyota Hilux or Mercedes Vito type vehicles are not deemed to be cars

Anyone using the reuse or recycling centres is required to wear a high visibility vest. If you have obtained authorisation to use the centres, for example you are using a car, or you have pre-notified your arrival, Western Riverside Waste Authority will lend you a vest to use while you are there.

If you have not obtained authorisation to use the centres however, for example you are not using a car and you have not pre-notified your arrival, you may be charged to hire one. Alternatively, you may of course use a high visibility vest of your own.

Please note: you must have authorisation to tip a refrigerator.

Western Riverside

Cars under 6’ 6" in height (without trailers) can freely use the Reuse and Recycling Centre at Smugglers Way during the opening hours detailed below and no pre-notification of arrival is necessary.

If you are arriving in a car to tip a fridge/freezer you will not need to seek authorisation, but you will if you are arriving in a van.

You may be charged for DIY waste or builders’ waste if you are in a van and have not pre-registered or cannot prove that you are resident. For further details please telephone Smugglers Way on 020 8871 2788.

Car batteries and household batteries can be taken to this site where the sulphuric acid is drained and the metal sent for recycling.

What can I recycle at this site?

As well as paper and card, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, empty aerosols, tins and cans and food and drink cartons, you can deposit the following for recycling or reuse:

  • gas bottles
  • tapes and discs
  • printer cartridges
  • bicycles
  • electrical appliances
  • garden waste
  • fluorescent tubes
  • fridges and freezers
  • scrap metal
  • hardcore and rubble
  • mobile phones
  • wood and timber
  • gas bottles
  • engine oil
  • textiles, clothes and shoes
  • batteries
  • books

Cringle Dock

Cars under 6’ 6" in height (without trailers) can freely use the Reuse and Recycling Centre at Cringle Dock during the opening hours below and no pre-notification of arrival is necessary.

If you are arriving in a car to tip a fridge/freezer you will not need to seek authorisation, but you will if you are arriving in a van.

Please note: Cringle Dock Reuse and Recycling Centre has only limited recycling facilities.

Pre-Notification of Arrival

If you intend to transport household waste from your own residence in anything other than a car, then you must pre-notify Western Riverside Waste Authority of your arrival and provide proof of identity when you arrive at site. Residents of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea can Pre-Notify online at anytime or by calling Streetline on 020 7361 3001 during office hours. Please note that whether you Pre-Notify online or by phone, you will need to supply the following:

  • your name
  • your address (which must also be the origin of the waste)
  • your e-mail address (only if you want confirmation of your pre-notification)
  • contact telephone number
  • registration number of vehicle (or if hired - the hire company name and address)

When arriving to deposit your waste and recycling you should enter the site via the main trade site entrance and make your way to the weighbridge.

At the weighbridge, you will be asked to sign a document confirming that you live within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and that you are depositing your own waste and recycling from your own residence. You will also have to prove your identity and address details.

The simplest way of doing this is by showing a current photocard driving licence, but there are alternative methods. For full details please see Pre-Notification of Arrival for vans
