Documents needed to prove where you live in the Royal
Borough
All documents must clearly show your name and your address in
the Royal Borough. You must send us original documents with your
application (this also applies for renewal applications). We will
not accept photocopied, faxed or scanned documents.
From the selection below you must provide two documents to
prove your residency. Note: If your driving
licence does not show your current address you must still send it
as it is proof you can drive.
Electoral register
If your name appears on the currently published electoral
register you can use this as one proof of residency. You can find
out if your name is on the electoral register by email to elect@rbkc.gov.uk or by
telephone on 020 7361 3444.
Council Tax Bill
If your name appears on the Council Tax bill for your address in
the Borough you can use this as one proof of residency as long as
the billing address is also your home address in the borough.
Please note that:
- if your name appears on both
the Electoral Register and on the Council Tax bill for your
address, these will count as the two proofs of residency you
require. You do not need to provide documents to prove this as
we can verify these details for you.
- if your name appears
only on the Electoral Register or
only on the Council Tax bill, you must provide one
more original document from the list below.
- if your name does not appear in both the
Electoral Register and the Council Tax bill, you must provide
two original documents from the list below.
The documents we accept are:
i) Valid Driving Licence showing your name and
address
ii Current Council or Housing Trust rent book
or statement
iii) Valid Home Contents Insurance policy
iv) Current Benefits or Pension statement
(relating to the current year)
v) Alien Registration Card
vii) Firearms Certificate
vii) Tenancy agreement (not handwritten, and
valid for the duration of the permit you require)
viii) Current Bank or Building Society
statement (dated within the last 3 months. We do not accept credit
card or online statements)
ix) Solicitor’s letter of completion dated
within the last three months. Please note we will issue a three
month permit only if this is one of your proofs of residency. This
will give you time to produce the two proofs we need to see when
you renew your permit.
x) Accredited Diplomats can provide a letter
from their Embassy as one of the proofs of residency.
The documents must clearly show your name and address.
We do not accept photocopied, faxed or scanned documents.
We do not accept gas, electricity, phone, cable or water
bills.
Living-in staff (nannies, chauffeurs and so on)
You will need to provide a current contract of employment which
shows that you have to live in the Royal Borough as part of your
job. You will need to provide one item from the list above to prove
where you live.
We will only issue a maximum of a three-month permit.
Moving house
If you have moved into the Royal Borough in the last three
months and cannot provide the necessary proof of where you live, we
will issue a three-month permit when you provide either a new
tenancy agreement or a solicitor's letter confirming that the sale
has been completed.
You must register with Council Tax before we can process your
application. This will give you enough time to produce the proof we
need to see when the permit runs out.
