Hans Crescent Environmental Improvement Scheme
Background
In January 2006 Transport for London decided to permanently
close Hans Crescent at its junction with Brompton Road for safety
reasons. Subsequently, officers in conjunction with primary
stakeholders (Harrods and Quinlan Private) developed a scheme to
provide a high quality shared surface for the closed section of the
road between Brompton Road and Basil Street, tipping the balance
firmly in favour of pedestrian use. This scheme has now been
completed.
About the scheme
The road is now a ‘single surface’ paved with porphyry, a high
quality, hard-wearing natural stone that is ideal for paving
applications. Its colour combines the neutral colours of the
contemporary buildings with the classical browns and reds of the
Harrods building.
The paving includes three radial patterns at focal points, with
complementary street furniture and seating to accentuate the high
quality feel of the area. Tree planting and new street lighting
create architectural interest and define the vehicular route. The
street is now a restricted zone with parking prohibited at any time
and loading restricted during peak hours. Traditional traffic signs
and lines have therefore been omitted.
A new drop-off facility for car borne visitors and taxis to set
down and pick up has been provided at the junction with Basil
Street and the existing taxi rank has been modified to allow taxis
to feed more easily into the new turning area from Basil Street.
The eight resident parking spaces previously located in Hans
Crescent have been relocated in the surrounding streets.
