We are making changes to traffic flows in the area in order to improve road safety and make your experience of Exhibition Road more enjoyable – whether you’re a driver or a pedestrian.
The one-way system around South Kensington Station has been removed and traffic has been restored to a simple two-way scheme. This has included the following changes:
Through traffic will be removed from Glendower Place and parking will be permitted on both sides of this largely residential road. The direction of the one way restriction will be reversed and Harrington Road will also switch to two-way.
These changes are easing congestion, creating large pedestrian areas to the north and south of the station, as well as allowing for wider pavements and more simple pedestrian crossings to improve safety. Vehicle journeys through the area will be reduced, cutting pollution and congestion.
Overall, we expect the project to generate a significant drop in traffic on Exhibition Road, which will follow completion of the traffic management changes in South Kensington in late 2009. In addition,
a new 20mph speed limit will be introduced on Exhibition Road and drivers will be alerted to pedestrian priority as they enter the single surface area.
Traffic movements will be simplified in Exhibition Road. All turns between Exhibition Road and Cromwell Road will be banned, with the exception of a single eastbound left turn towards Knightsbridge.
This will allow for safer pedestrian crossings at this busy junction –
they will be widened and made more direct, with ‘green man’ traffic signal controls maintained to provide safe crossing points on all arms
of the junction.
