The nearest tube station to the Exhibition Road area is South Kensington Station, which can be accessed by the Piccadilly, Circle and District lines.
Starting in 2013, London Underground is expected to carry out a three year, £11 million ‘enhanced refurbishment’ of the station. This will involve new cabling, the relocation of the station control room, repainting and the restoration of the tiled façade on the south side of the station.
Proposals for some limited development at the station are currently under consideration by London Underground. This could generate profits to help fund lift facilities as part of the ‘step free’ access proposals at the station which were recently removed from TfL’s 10 year business plan due to lack of funding.
A total of 13 bus routes serve the Exhibition Road area.
Bus stops on Thurloe Street adjacent to South Kensington Station have been relocated to the southern end of Cromwell Place, outside the cheese shop. Buses from central London will travel west along Thurloe Place, stopping at this new bus stop.
Most services travelling into central London will use the existing bus stop on the west side of Cromwell Place, outside the bank. Current proposals are for these services to travel north along Cromwell Place, before turning right into Cromwell Road and on to central London.
Transport for London is currently consulting on bus routes. Further details can be found on the TfL website.
Some diversions to bus routes and temporary stops/stands will be necessary during the traffic management works. Route details can be found below and the Council will provide an update on when changes are due to take place.
There is a taxi rank in Harrington Road, close to South Kensington Station, which will be retained in the new traffic scheme.
Significantly increased and more conveniently located cycle parking provision will be made available in the area, both in the immediate vicinity of South Kensington Station and along Exhibition Road itself. Allowance will be made to increase this provision should monitoring
of demand show this to be necessary.
There may also be provision for a cycle hire ‘docking station’ in
Thurloe Street under the Mayor of London’s Bicycle Hire Scheme.
