Children and family care
Protecting children
Social workers can help parents in a number of ways. They will
assess the needs of the family and what services would meet them.
If the services are available, they will then try to put parents
and children in touch with them. They can also provide direct help
to families in the form of advice, practical assistance, guidance
and counselling. In exceptional circumstances Social Services may
apply to the courts to remove a child, usually on a short-term
basis, if he or she is at risk of significant harm.
We have a legal duty to make enquiries if we receive information
that a child is at risk of significant harm.
