Using the ‘Tab’ key to navigate links on a web page

You can navigate around the links of a page by using the “Tab” key on your keyboard. Using this method you will jump between the links on a page from top to bottom.

To navigate around the links

This example is based on Internet Explorer.

  1. When viewing a page, simply press the “Tab” key until the link you are interested in accessing is highlighted. The first highlight will be the address at the top of the page.
  2. In Internet Explorer, links that are "highlighted" will appear with dotted lines around them. See the example shown below. Note: Not all browsers may show a "highlighted" link in this way.:

  1. Once you reach the link you want, select the “enter” key to access it.

If you miss a link

If you miss the link you want, you can jump back to it by using the “Shift” key. Hold down the “Shift” key and press the “Tab” key. You will jump back through the links going up the page instead of down.

Have a practice

Try using the "Tab" key on this page and see if you can jump up and down the links.
