Why teach in Kensington and Chelsea?

High quality continuing professional development and networking opportunities for teachers are available at all stages of your career. We recognise that the development of the whole school workforce is essential and has a significant influence upon the success of our pupils and schools.

Joining one of our schools as a beginning teacher, you will receive a high-quality induction programme for Early Career Teachers (ECTs) that will support your progress through your first years of teaching.  Every ECT starting induction is entitled to a designated mentor and an induction tutor who will have responsibility for coaching, supporting your development and monitoring your progress through your professional induction. 

Schools work well together in a range of partnerships. The local Central London Teaching School Hub (CLTSH) led by Paddington Academy, delivers a range of training and development opportunities. From September 2023, CLTSH is the relevant local appropriate body for all new ECT joiners serving induction in Kensington and Chelsea. CLTSH works with DfE approved Early Career Framework (ECF) training provider, Ambition Institute, for delivery of the Full Induction Programme to ECTs undertaking induction. Many schools follow this ECF programme for their ECTs, although there are other options for schools to choose according to their particular circumstances and preferences. CLTSH also offer initial teacher training, and National Professional Qualifications (NPQs).

Schools in the borough benefit from a wealth of educational resources and partnerships such as the Tri-Borough Music Hub that works with leading cultural institutions such as the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal College of Music.
   
On our doorstep are the vibrant and world famous Portobello Market and King’s Road. There are leading museums such as the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Kensington and Chelsea for its size has a wealth of green space in Holland Park and Kensington Gardens, and borders the River Thames to the South.

Our schools

Kensington and Chelsea is one of the smallest, inner London boroughs. It is very diverse both socio-economically, ethnically and culturally. Over 150 different languages are spoken in local and neighbouring schools. Almost 50% of children are bi-lingual, with a quarter of primary aged children being beginners in English. 

There are  3 nursery schools and children’s centres, 24 primary Church of England, Roman Catholic and non-denominational community schools, 1 primary free school and 2 primary academies. We also have 2 special schools, one in Swanley, Kent, as well as a Hospital School, a Virtual School and one Alternative Provision setting.There are 2 Roman Catholic secondary schools, 3 secondary academies (1 RC) and a Roman Catholic Sixth Form. 

Good outcomes for all

Schools in Kensington and Chelsea perform very strongly. Results achieved by children attending our schools significantly exceed the levels of attainment that the demographics of the borough would suggest they should, and key stage outcomes in our schools are among the highest across the country. At Key Stage 1 and 2, along with performance at GCSE and A level outcomes have been consistently well above national averages.

95% of our schools were rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted (October 2023), compared to 89% nationally (October 2023). This includes all of our schools, secondary, primary, special and nursery schools. Achievement gaps are some of the lowest in the country for children eligible for free school meals and special education needs, and continue to narrow year on year.

Children’s services in Kensington and Chelsea have been given a clean sweep of outstanding ratings in every practice by Ofsted, the independent inspectorate (2019). “Staff in Kensington and Chelsea are highly skilled, qualified and experienced. They embody the values of care, respect and integrity and visibly care about the children they are responsible for and their families.”

In the most recent Joint Area (Ofsted and Care Quality Commission - CQC) SEND inspection (February 2022), inspectors found that:

  • Children and young people with SEND across education settings achieve very well.
  • Professionals in the area have developed creative ways to improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND who might be at risk of disengaging with education.
  • Professionals across all settings and agencies work in an extremely collaborative way to improve the outcomes for children and young people with SEND.
  • Transition at key points in education is consistently well managed by professionals.
  • Young people with SEND are prepared well for adulthood. EHC plans contain appropriate and ambitious outcomes that prepare young people for adulthood.
