Latest news
Kensington and Chelsea residents have chosen the Natural History
Museum to represent their local area in the build-up to the 2012
Olympic Games.
The Natural History Museum will be the image representing the
Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea on a celebratory set of 33
‘Landmark London’ pin badges. The winners of the vote were
announced in the week leading up to the 1,000 days milestone on
Saturday 31 October.
In the summer Kensington and Chelsea teamed up with the London
2012 Organising Committee and London Councils to offer residents
the opportunity to vote for their favourite local landmark to
feature on the badges. The Natural History Museum will feature
alongside other London landmarks including Battersea Power Station,
Westminster Abbey and the Globe Theatre
The pin badges will go on sale next year.
Celebration and Local Legacy
Here in the Royal Borough we are one of the official olympic
sporting venue hosts - with the indoor volleyball competition to
take place at Earl’s Court. We are looking to the Games to inspire
change and to deliver a strong message of living life locally.
This could involve forging a stronger sense of community,
nurturing a warmer welcome to our fellow residents and our
visitors, or building a more vibrant place to do business. The
Games is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make a real difference
to how we live our lives.
Our three ambitions for local legacy are:
Celebration - a better recognition of the Royal Borough as the
place for creativity and innovation
During the Olympics, only the most high profile, extraordinary
public events will attract the attention of visitors, Londoners and
media alike, so the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, in
partnership with the Exhibition Road Cultural Group, is developing
an eight-day festival to provide a fitting spectacle for London’s
Games.
Exhibition Road will be transformed by 2012 into a memorable,
world-class streetscape, and this festival will make the most of
all of its possibilities.
Participation - more residents participating in local life
through volunteering
Working with the borough’s voluntary and community sector,
including the Social Council and Volunteer Centre, the ambition is
to create new programmes as well as adding capacity to existing
ones.
This will increase the numbers of residents giving time and
expertise to local groups or making a financial pledge to support
local organisations which in turn, will help our residents to feel
more connected with their neighbourhood, ward and the whole
borough. It will also provide exciting volunteering alternatives to
the Games.
Activation - more residents taking part in sport and physical
activity
We aim to help our residents enjoy sport and physical activity.
This doesn't necessarily mean formal sports but is more about
helping our residents become healthier in mind and body.
North Kensington has the highest levels of lifestyle related
illness, and the lowest levels of participation in sports activity
in the Royal Borough, so this programme will co-ordinate and target
sports and physical activity participation programmes across North
Kensington Sports Centre; the Westway Sports Centre; schools, youth
and sports clubs; and parks and open spaces in North Kensington
including Kensington Memorial Park and Little Wormwood Scrubs.
Following consultation with local residents and sports
organisations, the programme will contribute to improving sports
facilities in Little Wormwood Scrubs to leave a continuing physical
legacy.
