Thurloe Place Gardens
Address: Thurloe Place
SW7
Near busy South Kensington tube this small
peaceful garden contains the Yalta Memorial which remembers those
people who were forcibly repatriated by the Allies to Eastern
Europe and the Soviet Union after the Second World War. Many did
not survive the journey home and those that did faced starvation
and disease.
History
This square, begun in 1840 by G. Basevi,
announced a new era in Italianate town house design. It is named
after John Thurloe who, it is said, was presented with land in
Brompton by Oliver Cromwell for services rendered during the
Commonwealth.
