Royal Borough libraries jump up with steel band17 July 2001Holland Park will come alive to the sound of music today (17 July), when Fox Primary School pupils join the Ebony Steel Band in launching the Royal Borough’s Reading Carnival. Over half a million 4-13 year olds UK-wide are taking part in a Reading Carnival this summer, but for Kensington and Chelsea bookworms, the library programme takes on a special significance. With the second biggest street festival in the world due to take place here in seven weeks, youngsters are being encouraged to join in the true spirit of the Notting Hill Carnival. The Reading Carnival is part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to the Notting Hill Carnival. The launch will see the Ebony Steel Band encourage Fox Primary pupils to try their hands at creating the famous Caribbean Carnival sound. “This library programme is most fitting here in the Royal Borough amid preparations for the Notting Hill Carnival, and local libraries are encouraging participants to celebrate the real Carnival spirit,” said Chairman of Education and Libraries, Councillor Christopher Buckmaster. “Much of the Council’s support for Carnival is inevitably concerned with safety and logistics – this scheme just goes to show that we too can share and enjoy the fun of Carnival.” The Reading Carnival offers children fun incentives to read for pleasure during the summer holidays. Every child participating receives a fun Carnival folder and special review postcard for every book read. Bookworms who succeed in meeting the challenge of reading six books will receive a Carnival certificate. For further information on the Reading Carnival, contact your nearest Royal Borough library.
