Parks' Bobby holds on to suspect despite heart attack

12 May 2003

A Royal Borough Parks' police constable injured during a struggle to detain a suspect is to be personally thanked by Council leaders on Monday 12 May.

PC Ashley Bastian, 52, is more usually involved in enforcing byelaws in beautiful Holland Park, in Kensington and Chelsea.

But last Friday while away from the park on other Council business, PC Bastian used his citizen's powers to intervene in a street incident and detain a man suspected of involvement in a burglary.

During the struggle the suspect is alleged to have produced a chisel. But despite receiving a serious facial wound, former Indian Army Officer PC Bastian held on to his man until the Metropolitan Police arrived. Incredibly, Ashley had only returned from sick leave two days earlier following a serious heart attack.

A man has been charged in connection with the incident.
