Walking is the way

19 May 2003

Children and parents in the Royal Borough will take to the streets this week as part of the national 'Walk to School' campaign.

Twenty-nine schools and nurseries in the Royal Borough will be taking part in this year's campaign that encourages people to walk to school instead of driving. In cases where the journey is too far to walk the message is to drive part of the way and walk the rest to keep the school gate area clear of traffic.

Every child who walks to school during 'Walk to School' week will be given a sticker to wear and schools have been asked to carry out a travel survey to determine which class at each school had the most pupils walking. The top classes will receive certificates.

The top three 'walking' schools will be awarded a 'Walk to School' week trophy to commend their achievement.

Safety will be the number one priority throughout the week with Central Traffic Police at Euston on hand to provide additional policing in the Royal Borough. Police Officers will also join Council Officers to talk to parents and children about walking to school over healthy 'walkers' breakfasts' laid on at the schools and nurseries.

Cllr Mrs Taylor said: "I am pleased that so many people are set to take part in the campaign this week. Everyone who participates will be doing their bit to help reduce noise and air pollution as a result of leaving their cars at home. Walking to school has many health benefits for both children and parents and I encourage parents to continue walking with their children to school and to all the other beautiful places this Borough has to offer."
