The right spirit2 July 2003The Royal Borough's efforts to tackle the sale of counterfeit or substituted spirits have been recognised by the International Federation of Spirits Producers UK (IFSP). It presented the Borough with an award at the recent Trading Standards Institute Conference on 25 June. The Borough was commended for its sampling protocol and contribution towards anti-substitution activity. This is where unscrupulous sellers switch the premium brand spirits for a cheaper brand. The Federation was impressed by the amount of sampling carried out by the Borough. Earlier this year officers from the Council's Environmental Health department took spirit samples from eight premises in the Borough and after tests were carried out two samples were found to be inconsistent with the original spirit and had indeed been substituted for a cheaper variety. One establishment has been formally cautioned and the Royal Borough is considering action against another. For further information contact Press and Public Relations.
