A sure start for under-4s

21 July 200

Until recently it was just a derelict site. Now the Play Hut at Little Wormwood Scrubs has undergone an astonishing transformation, and this week (Wednesday 30 July) it welcomed young children and their carers once again when it re-opened.

The new building opened for business at 12pm, providing a drop-in service for the under-4s and their parents and carers. Following a £100,000 redevelopment of the garden, children aged 0-5 years will also be able to enjoy an exciting and stimulating play area.

Councillor Shireen Ritchie, Cabinet Member for Social Services and Health, said: "This is a splendid development. It gives local children a wonderful environment to play in, and offers an excellent facility for carers and parents in the local community."

The project has been led by Sure Start North West Kensington, working in partnership with the Dalgarno Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) and Notting Hill Housing Group.

The building and adjacent garden had been left derelict and in a state of disrepair for several years. Local families campaigned for the re-opening of the drop-in service and Sure Start and its partners took on the project. Funding for the garden came from Sure Start North West Kensington, the Western Riverside Environmental Fund and the local Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.
