Product recall31 July 2003The Royal Borough's Environmental Health Officers are urging people to look out for products that have been affected by an illegal carcinogenic dye called Sudan 1. The product concerned is a chilli powder that has been used as an ingredient in some Rajah and Shaws branded products. Environmental Health Officers are asking anyone who may have bought one of the products listed below not to use it, but to contact Rajah or Shaws on the numbers below to arrange for a refund. The products should then be thrown away. Sudan 1 is not a permitted colour under the Colours in Food Regulations 1995. It is considered to be a carcinogen and its presence, at any level, is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose. There is no immediate risk of illness. If you have eaten a product occasionally any possible risk is likely to be very small. Frequent eating of contaminated products over a long period of time would increase that risk. Rajah and Shaws have undertaken a full withdrawal of products affected and have both set up customer enquiries telephone lines. The Rajah Consumer Services team can be contacted on 0800 0721122. Shaws can be contacted on 01484 539999.
