2000 children go out to play

11 August 2003

The theme for this year's National Play Day was "Get Out There And Play" and that is certainly what happened in the Royal Borough. On the 6 August, 2,000 children gathered in Emslie Horniman Park to enjoy a range of different play activities and entertainments.

By the end of a hot but fun day the children had exhausted themselves on fairground rides, Brazilian dancing and making a giant robot and spider out of Lego. A free barbeque was provided for the children by the Rotary Club.

The event, which brings together many of the statutory and voluntary providers of play in the Royal Borough, was opened by the Deputy Mayor Councillor Mushtaq Lasharie.

Councillor Mary Weale, Cabinet Member for Education, Libraries and the Arts said: "I am delighted that so many children were able to enjoy such a fun-packed day and would like to thank all the people who worked so hard to make it such a success. This day was all about the importance of play and the role it plays in stimulating children's development and well-being."
