Polluters pay

26 August 2003

From this week motorists will be seeing a new sight on the Royal Borough's roads. In a bid to improve London's air quality, vehicle emission testing teams will be working with the police to stop and check engine emissions.

If emission levels are found to be above those required for the MOT, a Fixed Penalty Notice may be issued. This could result in drivers paying as much as £60.

The Association of London Government on behalf of 28 London boroughs is running the vehicle emission testing programme across London.

Councillor Daniel Moylan, Cabinet Member for Planning and Transportation, said: "The main purpose of the vehicle emission testing programme is to improve air quality in London. While many companies and private motorists take good care of their vehicles, there are unfortunately some who do not. I hope that this scheme will go some way to persuading those drivers to keep their vehicles well maintained as cleaner vehicles will mean less pollution and improved air quality for everyone."
