Maybe not the biggest, but one of the best

29 August 2003

The Royal Borough is very happy with the way the Carnival went this year and would pay particular credit to the new organising body, London Notting Hill Carnival Ltd (LNHC).

The massive clean up operation undertaken by the Royal Borough was made that little bit easier thanks to better 'route management' of the Carnival procession itself. LNHC had a route management plan that saw the floats starting earlier and being phased gradually into the main procession itself. The plan worked well and lead to all floats being judged before the agreed close down time on Monday.

These improved timings lead to Carnival winding down earlier, which in turn enabled the Royal Borough to start the massive clear up operation that little bit earlier. This increased time has proved useful, with the Council receiving many congratulatory messages about the quality and speed of the clear up.

Many other areas that lie within the Royal Borough's responsibility also showed dramatic improvements:

  • Illegal street trading was well down on previous years
  • Food safety levels on the licensed stalls were generally good.
  • The sound systems have yet again maintained their good reputation with most of them shutting down by the 7.00pm close down time.
  • The Council parks, designed to be rest areas, were well used by thousands of Carnival goers and showed no sign of damage the next day.
