Kensington hosts national launch9 September 2003The Mayor of the Royal Borough, Councillor Buckmaster, attended the launch of a new national environmental partnership in Holland Park on Tuesday 9, 2003. The Green Flag Award, the benchmark award for high quality parks and public spaces, has partnered up with a supplier of low emission fuel to encourage the use of more environmentally friendly vehicles and equipment. The launch took place in Holland Park, itself a winner of a Green Flag Award. The well known TV presenter, John Craven was one of the speakers. The Green Flag is an independent award that aims to provide the public view of what parks can and should offer. It aims to set standards for management and to promote the value of parks and green spaces as social places as well as places for walking, play, informal sports and for contact with the natural world. The sponsorship deal will see the low emission fuel provider give guidance on the use of lower emissions grounds care equipment and alternative fuels. These will form part of Green Flag's guidance notes to local authorities bidding to achieve the recognised standard in public spaces. The Mayor said "I am more than happy to support this national event and the important issues that surround it. The Green Flag awards have become the benchmark against which the quality of public parks and green spaces can be measured. At the Royal Borough, we are proud that Holland Park has been granted such an award, reflecting the value the local community attaches to green space in the Borough. Reducing the amount of harmful emissions given out by vehicles and equipment used in parks is the logical progression of this thinking" For more information contact Media
