Chocks away for young high-flyers

10 September 2003

Young people from the Royal Borough spent some of their summer holidays learning to be high flyers courtesy of the Council and 46F (Kensington) Squadron Air Training Corps. And they responded so well to the challenge that they surprised organisers.

At a passing-out ceremony on Friday (September 5) they showed what they had learnt including team work, radio communications and expedition and camping skills.

The 15 young people aged 13 to 17 had all been referred to the scheme by agencies including Connexions Personal Advisers and the Council's own Social Services.

Part of the national Positive Activities for Young People programme, this was the first time that the Council has worked with the Air Training Corps to run a tailored course and the success of the scheme in motivating the young people involved was a welcome surprise.

And after completing the course, the hard-working participants all had the chance to try piloting a plane at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire.

Councillor James Husband, Lead Member for Education, Libraries and Arts, said : "The commitment shown by these young people is impressive. They achieved a lot in just three and a half weeks and should be proud of themselves. They are lucky to have had the chance to learn skills which I am sure they will find useful in the future."

Each participant in the course received first aid training, a uniform, sleeping bag, boots and squadron polo shirt and certificates showing their attendance and the skills they had learnt.
