Treats and snacks food safety prosecution24 September 2003A kiosk on platform two at South Kensington Underground Station sold an inedible, mouldy apple slice and last week (16 September) the business's owners were taken to court by Royal Borough Environmental Health Officers. The owners of Treats & Snax Ltd, trading as Treats, were convicted of breaching Section 8 of the Food Safety Act 1990 at West London Magistrates' Court after pleading guilty to selling an apple slice which was so contaminated by mould that it would not be reasonable to expect it to be used for human consumption. The company was fined a total of £4,000 and ordered to pay all of the Royal Borough's costs of £1,400, amounting to a total of £5,400. The case follows previous breaches last year of the Food Hygiene Regulations by Acton-based Treats & Snax Ltd, when the company was heavily fined for failing to keep the kiosk clean and free of mice. Cllr Richard Walker-Arnott, Cabinet Member for Environmental Health, Leisure and Waste Management, said: "Businesses selling food to the public must be vigilant in ensuring they are not endangering public health. This is a classic example of an incident which could easily have been avoided, and should have been. After the heavy fine this company received last year, we would expect them to have cleaned up their act and this latest offence is unacceptable. I hope the Council's actions will be an example to other businesses to take their responsibilities seriously." For more information contact Media and Communications.
